Last Minute New Year Gift

This New Year I wanted something different, so I decided to gift a paper toy to all my friends.

Here is what I will gift to them :

To make these I used the following:

1. Paper Toy of Salazad (Free template download from : Salazad Paper Toys )

2. For the box I used a blank box template (Get it from website Adityastar.com)

I used Hand made craft paper for the box so I didn't needed to print any texture.

It took me around 20 minute to build one box and one toy, so I made around 40 of these and I will gift them to those whom I can meet personally on 1st Jan 2011.

Three Wishes of Alexandar the Great

 There is very instructive incident involving the life of Alexander, the great Greek king.

Alexander, after conquering many kingdoms, was returning home. On the way, he fell ill and it took him to his death bed. With death staring him in his face, Alexander realized how his conquests, his great army, his sharp sword and all his wealth were of no consequence.

He now longed to reach home to see his mother's face and bid her his last adieu. But, he had to accept the fact that his sinking health would not permit Him to reach his distant homeland. So, The mighty conqueror lay prostrate and pale, helplessly waiting to breathe his last. He called his generals and said, "I will depart from this world soon,

I have three wishes, please carry them out without fail." With tears flowing down their cheeks, the generals agreed to abide by their king's last wishes.

" My first desire is that," said Alexander, " My physicians alone must carry my coffin." After a pause, he continued, " Secondly, I desire that when my coffin is being carried to the grave, the path leading to the graveyard be strewn with gold, silver and precious stones which I have collected in my treasury.


" The king felt exhausted after saying this. He took a minute's rest and continued. "My third and last wish is that both my hands be kept dangling out of my coffin ."

The people who had gathered there wondered at the king's strange wishes. But no one dare bring the question to their lips. Alexander's favorite general kissed his hand and pressed them to his heart. " O
king, we assure you that your wishes will all be fulfilled.

But tell us why do you make such strange wishes?"

At this Alexander took a deep breath and said: " I would like the world to know of the three lessons I have just learnt. I want my physicians to carry my coffin because people should realize that no doctor can really cure any body .

They are powerless and cannot save a person from the clutches of death. So let not people take life for granted .

The second wish of strewing gold, silver and other riches on the way to the graveyard is to tell people that not even a fraction of gold will come with me. I spent all my life earning riches but cannot take anything with me. Let people realize that it is a sheer waste of time to chase wealth .

And about my third wish of having my hands dangling out of the coffin, I wish people to know that I came empty handed into this world and empty handed I go out of this world ."

With these words, the king closed his eyes. Soon he let death conquer him and breathed his last.

Back after some time

 For past few months I was extremely busy, as I had joined college and also my one year old kid like Computer Mouse very much therefore he doesn't allow me to work on computer without giving him the mouse (That too connected to Computer). So I thought it would be nice time to take a small break from online world.

But now I will take out some time and again try to post some really nice stuff.

Recently I visited Oriland website (http://www.oriland.com) and I was so much impressed by the work of its creator that I decided to try my hands on Origami.

Previously I worked with Paper Craft, Kirigami and now Origami. For those who don't know what these are :

Paper Craft : Creating stuffs from Paper with the help of scissor, glue and other craft materials. You can make real life replicas with papercraft. There is virtually no limitation.

Kirigami: In this art of paper, Designs are created by folding and Cutting Paper. No Glue is used. There are some beautiful designs which are made using Kirigami.The Notre Dame Cathedral I made was work of Kirigami (Notre Dame Cathedral Kirigami Model)

Origami: In this art of Paper, Designs are created by Folding Square or Rectangle paper. No cutting, glueing or any printing is involved.

The Creator of Oriland Website Yuri and Katrin Shumakov have created lots of beautiful designs.

There designs are available for purchase (you will get instruction sheets). They are easy to understand and anyone can create nice origami models with them. I have purchased three ebooks from them and am making some origami models. Here is sample:

Alvin Self Healing Cutting Mat

Recently I purchased Alvin Self Healing Cutting Mat from Global E-Bay. It costed me Rs. 1760 ($35) which included the shipping cost and customs duties also. The actual cost of a cutting mat can be less but its not easily available in India as people do not consider Paper Craft as a hobby or even don't understand it.

I ordered it on 26th August and got it on 8th September 2010, that is a very fast delivery as I was expecting around 30 days to ship it to me.

The Cutting Mat I ordered was of 12"X18" Size and it is really of very good quality. Previously I was using glass as base for all my cutting work but by using glass as base material I need to use a lot of force for cutting, it was risky and blades sharpness wears out very quickly.

Now after using This cutting Mat for more than 15 days I can say that the money spent was worth. It helped me in increasing my cutting speed with less sprain on my hands. I am loving it.

Print on Demand is not new but the problem is that till date only business documents and books were available through it. What if you want to pint paper models? Literally there were no service available earlier for Indians. In US you can get documents printed through Staples but in India no one was there.

But now there is one which not only provides cheap rates but also fast service. Almost next day delivery. The Service is of Overnite Express, name Justprint.in

To test their service I ordered 10 A3 Size printouts on 225 GSM Matt Finish (cost Rs. 19.60 per page), in which I put some tiles of HVStreet Model (WorldWorksGames) and my personal tiles of Grass which I am making for my future Forest Model. Overall the service of Justprint.in is so good that soon I am going to make a big order of around 40-50 A3 pages with them (I am preparing the pages). I also recommend all Indian Paper Model makers to try their service and save time, money and efforts for printouts.

500 th Post

This is the 500th Post of This Blog. Certainly this blog has grown a lot since it starting (from a personal blog to a blog which provides valuable resources from Internet, Tutorials and lots more).

Paper craft : Dragon Optical Illusion

Yesterday I came across a great Paper Illusion, its a paper model of Dragon which when viewed by different angles makes viewer feel that Dragon's head is following him.

It really works, I have downloaded and made one for myself and it works very effectively.

Notre Dame Cathedral & Other Foldable Paper Cards

There are some work of Art which catches your eyes very easily, and there is one artist whose work is similar. He is Yee, he has created some really beautiful paper designs from V8 Engine to V12 Engine and some beautiful Foldable Paper Models. I wanted to buy them to create one for myself but I didn't purchased beacuase I had other priorities but luckily recently they started a Summer Promotion, offering the same models at extremely cheap prices. I purchased Norte Dame Cathedral and Partenon Foldable Paper Model and I was really amazed when I got the file. It was superb. Easy as it looked but still the paper cutting involved was painful and required a lot of patience.

Right now I am making the Note Dame Cathedral whose final picture (When it will be complete) is below :





The above model may seem easy to create as it is of 14 Pages only, but the main problem which is small window and other cuts. It took around 3 hours to cut one small section as it needed very fine cutting. I believe that it will take around 10-12 days for me to complete it and I will post my final pictures of Notre Dame Cathedral Here.

An E-Mail Newsletter is a great way to attract users to your website and inform them about new products. There are lots of mailing list softwares available on Internet but most of them either are feature less or are heavily paid. You will be able to find a Component ACY Mailing and using it you can send various newsletters. There are some readymade templates and designing a newsletter is very easy if you know how to create article in Joomla as it is an article which will be sent to your mailing list.

You can create unlimited Newsletters and Mailing Lists with Different Users in every list. You can also see how many have opened the mail in stats, also you can send a test mail before sending it to the list.

You can manually add users in the list or send mail to all Joomla users and many more options to configure.

Facebook Connect With Joomla

Today after much thought I finally decided to add Facebook Connect facility with my site Adityastar.com which is based on Joomla. My Site is in Joomla because there are lot of useful extensions available for joomla and most of them are free to use.

For Facebook connect I used an extension named : myAPI

It is free, easy to install and configure. All you need to do is download myAPI from Joomla Extension Directory (Direct Page for myAPI at Joomla Extension : Here)

Then install it. You will need to create an application in Facebook, just follow the instructions given in myAPI and you will be able to set up an application.

Then enable the Facebook Connect component, Facebook Fan Box component and Facebook activity component and configure them as per your requirement. Your Joomla site will be connected with Facebook.

A Movie by Prakash Jha. It was much hyped and luckily when it released I was in Delhi so I got chance to see the first day show.

First thing, there is nothing like Sonia Gandhi or any reference to any Political Party in this movie. Its not even look like the actual political scenario throughout the movie. The Killing and Violence is more inspired from Gangster Movies rather than any tricks which are used in Politics. For every problem in this movie, the only solution was Killing. Only in one scene it was shown that people of politics can trade, when Ranbir agreed to Marry Katrina but later due to political situation he has to ask Katrina to marry his older brother. Other than that no other scene showed any type of Politics. As I earlier said it was totally inspired by Godfather and it looked more as a Violent Gangster movie.

The elements of Mahabharat were there to justify certain actions of the actors as well as to bring some movement in story. But main objective of those elements was to let audience think that they have watched modern Mahabharat, but infact they watched Indian Godfather. Those who watched Godfather felt cheated while others enjoyed.

Another aspect which shall be talked and that is, this is first time Prakash Jha has to use Sex to promote his movie. Shruti Seth, Katrina Kaif and Sara they all showed their body and had one screen sex scene. To promote this movie Prakash Jha even said that there is one deleted sex scene (between Arjun Rampal and Theatre actress, Shruti Seth) which will be featured in DVD. Another gimik to promote the DVD of the movie.

This movie had more violence, sex than any Prakash Jha's movie and hence not a good idea to watch it with children.

My recommendation :

If you haven't watched The Godfather then you will surely like it (Rating : 4/5)
If you had watched The Godfather you will not like it very much (Rating : 3/5)

Overall it is a nice movie to watch atleast once but nothing special to speak about. Many would like it, talk about it but those who have watched real cinema may left a bit disappointed. This movie surely will be a hit, but it would never be a classic.
