Opera Mini 5 beta is really the best browser for Mobile Phones

Yes, I am saying it because I have tested Internet Explorer Mobile, Opera 4, Skyfire, and few more browsers (not worth mentioning). Among them the two browsers I liked are Opera 4 & Skyfire. But I was looking for some thing better, something which shall help me surfing many websites in tabs, showing the website exactly as it is and giving me desktop type browsing experience.

Finally it is possible, though it is not available for all Mobile Phones and is still in beta but it is really great. I am using it and loving it.

Download From website : Opera 5 beta 10

Some Cool Features :

Tabbed Browsing (You can open a lot of tabs)
Faster than Opera 4 (and Opera 4 was faster than any other mobile browser)
Password Manager
Mobile View/Desktop View
Landscape Mode
Adaptive Zoom
and lots more....

Check out the website for more info and mobile compatibility.

Have Fun

Setting BSNL 3G on Samsung Omnia Pro (B7320)

I am posting this tutorial so that all those who want to set up their Samsung Omnia Pro (B7320) Mobile phone with BSNL 3G to do Video Calls and use High Speed Internet.

First of all you will need a BSNL 3G SIM.

Video Calls

On your Phone Goto : Start->Settings->Phone->All Calls->Band Selection
There you will see 4 Options.

Select WCDMA
(You will receive a warning that it will work with 3G network only)

Then if your cell is able to catch the 3G Signal then you will see 3G in the main screen of your mobile phone.

Now you can make Video Calls without any trouble.

High Speed Internet Surfing

Keep the Band Selection option as WCDMA

Goto : Start->Settings->Connections->GPRS->New..

Put the following details :
Description : bsnlgprs
Connects to : The Internet
Access Point : bsnlnet

(Leave other settings as it is) then save it.

Now Connect your phone on your Laptop using Active Sync or whatever method you use (Not much trouble right now)

Again on your Cellphone Goto : Start->Internet Sharing

Select PC Connection : USB (or Bluetooth is you want to use it by Bluetooth)
Network Connection : bsnl_gprs
Then Connect

Within few seconds your Mobile will connect to 3G or High Speed Internet connection, you will see 3G or H near your network Signals.

Now you can surf Internet on your PC/Laptop

Do check your Surfing speed on : Speedtest.net

The speed will vary at different places depending upon the Network Signals.
Speed I got is 256 Kbps as network signals are weak at my place.

Have Fun

BSNL 3G Service

Finally I got my 3G Sim working, I brought it on 24th Dec 2009, way before anyone on Shahjahanpur was aware that 3G is about to be launched. But unfortunetly due to one single mistake, I could not used it for more than 20 days, and when it was officially launched then I went to check with the Local BSNL Franchisee and with some trial and error attempts I was able to get 3G signal on my Samsung Omnia Pro.

Its not like that I havn't contacted BSNL Customer Care but they were worst, they never had any idea what they were talking about and how to solve a particular problem. Infact they always say my call is to be forwarded to 3G department when already it was forwarded to them. They don't have any idea to what to say, even one went straight to say that he knows nothing and his superiors also don't listen to them so its useless to call Customer Care. I think BSNL should shutdown the Customer Care Deptt.

But finally it worked. One problem still I am facing and that is Signal Problem, I am not getting 3G Signal inside my house so I can not use it when I am in home :(

I tried to use the Video Call function but sadly none of my know person has 3G Phone or BSNL Sim, so I asked one of my friend to get a BSNL 3G Sim today and then we can check the Video Call option.

The Mobile TV Function will also not work on Samsung Omnia Pro, so its another loss of having Samsung phone over nokia ones.

But when I tested its Internet speed outside of my home then the results were good, though not as claimed by BSNL (might be signal problem). BSNL claims to get 3.2 Mbps speed but actually I got 0.2 Mbps speed which is equal to 250 Kbps speed, and this speed is same what I am getting from my Sify Broadband connection. So its good for now, but I will check the speed at different places to find what the actual speed I will get in Shahjahanpur.

I will soon put the BSNL 3G speed result as well as Video Call result on this blog very soon.

One month with Samsung Omnia Pro

Now I have used my Samsung Omnia Pro for more than one month and I can confidently say that it is a good phone. Lets see some of its features :

Interface

The interface is good but I missed the Exit button for almost all the applications, the problem is that when you want to close any application you find that there is no exit button or function so you go out by pressing the End Call button but the application keeps running on the background slowing down the mobile phone, So I always keep track of the applications by Task Manager and close them. With this practice the phone works very smoothly considering it has 256 MB of RAM, It works very good. The Interface design is good looking and I like the custom themes of Samsung.

Connectivity

The phone has good connectivity options, ranging from USB Cable, Blue tooth to Wi-Fi, it also supports GPRS, Edge and 3G. The Vodafone connection I am using has Edge and the net speed is remarkably high with Edge over standard GPRS. Now I am waiting for 3G to arrive at my city to test it out.

For Business Professionals

This phone has very good support for e-mail and instant messaging, which makes business communication very convenient. You would amaze to see how effectively it handles SMS and makes similar messages as conversations so that you can keep track of your communication. E-Mail support is very good, you can configure your server and free e-mail services can easily be configured. E-Mails can be set to download at certain interval with minimum of 15 minute.

I was able to set my e-mail accounts with it and it even configured Gmail account without need for any settings. Sending e-mails is easy and now I use it primary for e-mail communication.

It has MSN Messenger built in which supports Microsoft Live Account and works fine, though I don't use MSN much.

Apart from communication, it has basic version of MS Office Mobile which lets you open, edit and save MSWord, MSPowerpoint, MSExcel Files. You can't create any new file but with simple workaround you can do so. All you will need is just create blank Word, Powerpoint, Excel files created on your PC then transfer them to your Memory card and use them as template by opening them, editing and saving them as new file. This way you can create Files also.

It also has PDF Viewer, RSS reader and other similar features to help you connect with world.

Internet Explorer is a bit buggy as always but I download Opera Mini Browser and it works great. Just download it from mini.opera.com (It will say that it didn't support your mobile, but download it and it works good).

GPS

The best function of this phone is that it has Built in GPS receiver which works smoothly with Google Earth. Just download Google Earth and it works. Works great.

Multimedia

Its Music Quality is great and the hands free has quality almost comparable to ipod. The only thing that is lacking is that 3.5 mm Jack is missing, you cannot connect to Exterior Speakers or headphones. Other than that the Windows Media Player works good and the sound quality is far more superior than any other similar phones.

Camera

The 3.2 MP Camera works good in daylight (as you might have seen my other posts with some pictures which were taken from the Mobile Camera but without flash the camera is useless for dull light Pictures or interior pictures. There are a lot of options for Camera like Mosaic, Photo Frame and collage photos.

The second camera is for video calling but since 3G is not here so I can't test it out.

Upgradable

It says that it can be upgraded Free to Windows Mobile 7 but I have to wait to check it out. Also there are not much applications available for this phone.

Games

It has solitaire and bubble breaker preinstalled though I don't like games much but they are good and addictive. I was unable to find more games for this phone but I believe that JAVA games will work good on it.

Other Features

It has a lot of built in features like tip calculator, day calculator, and lots more but one feature I liked most is that when you download the youtube application from google then you can watch youtube videos on this mobile phone, due to Edge the speed of you tube video is good and mostly it show video without need for buffering which is a good thing. I can watch songs, television episodes etc on youtube. The contacts and Call list are practically unlimited and there are lot of fields for contacts and you can also find address of contacts on google Earth.

Keypad

The keypad is good with pressure sensitivity but somehow it won't be easy for persons having big fingers.

Verdict

Overall the phone is worth every paisa I spent on it though some things are annoying like lack of applications for windows mobile 6.1, No Flash, Bigger Keypad needed but considering its other features they are nothing to cry for. The weight of phone is less as compared to Nokia E-71.

IPhone in India

Today I recieved a mail from Vodafone that IPhone is being launched in India on August 22, 2008 as I had pre-registered the IPhone. The mail was really shocking to me. The shock was not due to the launch date but was due to the cost.

Previously it was hyped that IPhone would be available in India at a cost of Rs. 8000- Rs.10000. But Today I found that it will be available in 8GB & 16GB models, priced at Rs 31,000 and Rs 36,100 respectively. This is more than three times of the price previously told by Mobile operators. Also this price doesn't include the price for any connection subscription, that means either you have to use your existing Vodafone sim with this phone or you have to apply for a new connection.

Also one more thing you can't add up any new applications or games to IPhone just by downloading the software installers on your phone, you need to buy them from Apple Stores, you can't record video without buying a software, You can't use IPhone as USB Drive as it will work only with ITunes. Completely hook up to Apple products.

So welcoming IPhone in India with a heavy heart as in this price I could buy up a decent digital camera or Handy Camera for pictures and Videos (Around Rs. 15000), an ipod Nano for music (Around Rs.8000 - 10000), and keeping my regular Moto ROKR for internet and making calls, this way I can save a lot of money as well as get much better products. Or even I should buy a Sahara Small Laptop (Rs. 15000) and get an unlimited Internet connection on my Vodafone postpaid by paying just Rs. 500 per month and I can stay online all the time and also watch movies, play good games, work on word documents and so on. All less than Rs. 25000.

So decide yourself that whether IPhone at this price is justifiable or not. Do examine and evaluate other options too.

Using Internet with MOTO ROKR E6

I got my vodafone mobile connect working on my new MOTO ROKR E6. It was not that difficult at all. My cell already had the settings preinstalled, all I have to do was the following:

1. Installing the Mobile Drivers from the given CD.
2. Enabling the USB Modem mode from my cell phone through settings-> USB Mode-> Modem.
3. Then creating a new connection on my computer using the connection wizard.
Leaving all settings as it is only changing the number to dial i.e. *99#
4. You will also need to add the following string as it is in the Extra Settings in your Modem option at you Control Panel.
at+cgdcont=1,"ip","www" (Note: For details on how to do it, check my post for the Vodafone Mobile Connect Settings for Sony W550i.

5. Now you can easily connect your Internet.

Also one point to note, you can also use the Hutch Internet for using Internet on your mobile, you won't be charged extra apart from the default charge of Vodafone Mobile connect. Its better than Vodafone Live and cheaper also.

Settings for Vodafone Mobile Connect for Sony Ericsson Mobile Phone.

Vodafone mobile connect service is the Internet service provided by Vodafone Essar company in India. It was formally known as Hutch Access.
Through this service you can get unlimited surfing for just a monthly rental of Rs. 499/- (as the customer care tells u).

To get it you need a postpaid mobile connection. Then you need to activate it. You can do it in three ways :

1. By sending an sms to 111. The message will be : Act VMC499 (you can also send Act HA499)

Note: Vodafone Mobile Connect is different from Vodafone Live as Vodafone Live is free service with only data usage charges applied (10 paise per 10 kb) and it helps in surfing net on mobile, whereas through Vodafone Mobile Connect you can surf net through your pc or laptop.

Now considering you have activated the Vodafone Mobile Conect Service. You must recieve the settings, but if not you can send message www to 56789. The settings will be sent to you. If not then contact Customer Care.

For Sony Ericsson Mobile Phone the settings are as:

1. Goto Menu->Settings->Connectivity->Data Comm.->Data Accounts->New Account
2. Now create a new account named www
3. In the APN type www

3. Now Goto Control Panel->Phone and Modem Options->Modems
4. Select the Sony Ericsson W550 USB WMC Data Modem (In this case its W550)
5. Select Properties.
6. Select Advance and in Extra initializing command type the following : at+cgdcont=1,"ip","www"
7. Now Goto Control Panel->Network Connections
8. Select Create a New Connection
9. In the New connection Wizard Select Connect to the Internet -> Set up my connection Manually -> Connect using Dialup Modem -> Modem - Sony Ericsson W550 USB WMC Data Modem ->Put Vodafone in ISP Name -> Phone Number : *99***1# ->Then Next and Finish.
10. Now connect to Internet using this account and you will be online.

If there is any problem then don't worry as you can always contact to Customer Care (111) for any help.

The net speed is not very fast as Broadband but still its good enough for general surfing.

The Method is more or less same for all other mobile phones and by using bluetooth also.

So Enjoy Unlimited Surfing.

Changing the Display Driver of W550i

The Display of W550i is quite dull as compared to the bright display of W700i and higher models of Sony Ericsson.

So I decided to change the display driver of my w550i. It was risky but I was ready to take the risk as I knew that I will do it with proper precautions.

I already wrote an tutorial on connecting the W550i with Far Manager and XS++ So I will not rewrite it here. You can View that tutorial from Here.

So the files needed are :

1. Far Manager with SEFP Plugin (For CID 49 Phones)
2. XS++
3. Display driver of W700i

How to use Far Manager and XS++ is already discussed . To download these files the links are also given Here.
To Download the Display Driver go to http://niket.4shared.com (the password is free4all). From there go to Sony Ericsson->Driver->Display and download the dispdriver0.dat file (7kb).

After downloading the file store it in a easily accessible place on your pc say in c:\display

Then connect your cell phone with FAR Manager as described in the Far Manager Tutorial.
Go to ifs->Settings->Display

There you will find a dispdriver0.dat file, copy it to somewhere on your computer (say c:\original) by pressing F5 Key. I do this as precaution, in case the new driver doesn't work.
Then copy the new dispdriver0.dat file from c:\display to the Mobile (ifs->Settings->Display).

Now keep going back by pressing .. and exit the Loader and then FAR Manager using F10.

After reflashing as described in the Far Manager Tutorial, disconnect the phone and then start your mobile.

If everything goes fine your phone will start with new display driver. There will be no visible difference right now. You need to go to Menu->Settings->Display->Brightness on your Phone and then increase the brightness to 100%.

Now your phone will be more brighter then previous one and the display quality will be improved.

Note : If your phone doesn't restarts then you need to change back to original driver. Just do it by following the above steps and then copying back original display driver file on your mobile phone.

If the steps are done properly then there is no chance of messing up as this driver works. It has worked on my cell phone and my cell phone is now as bright as W700i.

So enjoy and if you have any problem then contact me (You can also read all the tutorials on the Mobile Phones Category.

PS: If anything goes wrong you can always Flash back your mobile phone. For details refer to this Post.

Enjoy

Using Far Manager With Sony Ericsson W550i

Here is a small tutorial based on my experience with connecting a Sony Ericsson W550i with Far Manager.

Firstly you will need to download the following Softwares and Files :

1. Far Manager (www.farmanager.com)
2. SEFP Plugin (www.farmanager.com There click on the Plugins)
3. XS++ (http://www.speedyshare.com/317930729.html
mirror : http://rapidshare.com/files/15929939/XS__V12.rar)
4. USB Driver (http://www.speedyshare.com/503754875.html
mirror : http://rapidshare.com/files/15929980/USBFlash.zip)
5.db2010cid49_3_2.rar.zip, which has the files created by den_po that will allow us to use FAR with Mobiles of CID 49 (http://www.uploading.com/files/6099H2D0/db2010cid49_3_2.rar.zip.html)

After downloading all the files. First Unzip Far Manager into a folder say Far Manager. Then Unzip SEFP in the Plugins folder of Far Manager. Also Unzip db2010cid49_3_2.rar.zip into any folder and then copy the SEFP folder to the Far Manager's Plugins folder. If it asks for overwrite then accept.

Now Unzip the USB Driver and Install it. Also Unzip the XS++.

Note : Make Your Phone Full Charge and then poweroff it and remove the SIM.

2. Start XS++ and Select your Cable then Press Start.
3. It will ask to connect your Cell to the cable while pressing c button. Do So (Make sure that your cell phone is switched off)
4. Then Select Flash Main Firmware in the XS++ and point it to the folder you extracted the files! Select then the file that corresponds to your phone , in my case (W550i) w550_r2e_dcu.49r.ssw !
Then Press Flash

The flash will start and will take around 1-2 minutes. The process will stop while Showing Finishing the flash. Press Stop after 1 minute of showing finishing flash cause It will not show further (It is a bug actually), It will say the process in not complete blah blah blah, ignore it and continue.

Now disconnect your phone and remove battery and wait for 30 sec. Do not switch on your cell phone.

5. Now start Far Manager. Press Alt+1 and select SEFP (generally at 0) After this select your cell phone model and press Enter the Matrix. (You can use tab and alt+tab to move between the selections).

Connect your Phone as you connected it with XS++.

6. Now go to FS and do whatever editing you wanted to do. Do not delete or change any file if you don't know because these are the system files of the cell phone and may cause your phone not to start. (read my previous post)

7. After doing all the editing go back by pressing .. and closing the SEFP then exit from the far manager by pressing F10 key.

8. Now restart the Farmanager and connect your phone.

This time select the Flash. Go to the directory where you extract the db2010cid49_3_2.rar.zip file. There in the REST folder copy the file rest_W550_R4CB020. It will ask that this is system are and such and such do you want to continue. Press Yes and your cell will flash.

9. Now close the far manager and disconnect your cell phone. Switch it on and Now you cell will start.

CAUTION: This process is very harmful and it may corrupt your cell phone software. So Do it at your own risk since I am also a starter so I won't give much help.

Modding & Flashing Sony Ericsson W550i

Today all of sudden it stirke in my mind, why not modd my Sony Ericsson W550i. Few hours back I was cursing myself for this decision. Why ? Well Here is the story.

In morning when I was surfing net, I came across a site http://forums.se-nse.net/index.php , I visited it long back when I had K700i but at that time I didn't had any cable to connect my K700i with PC, but this time I do have one. So I thought why not give it a try.

I first thought to add some flash menus as my interface. Also I wanted to extend my sms storage capacity. For that I went through various threads at the forum and I downloaded two softwares : Far Manager & XS++. I also downloaded SEFP Plugin by Darkman for Far Manager which helps in connecting Sony Ericsson Phones with Far Manager.

I first loaded Far Manager and using SEFP and tried to connect my cell phone in the routine way (power off then connect by pressing the c button), It didn't connected then I thought I might have missed something so I again went online in search for what is missing. Then I found that I need to install the USB Drivers, which eventually I downloaded immediately from the download section (http://forums.se-nse.net/index.php?showtopic=7699). After installing the USB Drivers I again tried connecting with Far Manager and this time my cell phone was detected and connected but to my surprise I was unable to browse the Flash or FS of my Cell Phone. Whenever I try to do so it gives me an error message. So I closed Far Manager, time to check XS++.

So I fired XS++ and connected my Cell Phone there. It detected in first attempt and There I tried to upload the files (To upload files using XS++, You need to put the files in files_to_upload directory under the XS++ directory in the same structure as you want them to go in the cell phone). XS++ aske me to use one of the two methods : 1. Brute Force (May take upto 5 hours or more), 2. Experimental (Fast but your Phone may not work again).

As I was low on time and patience so I choosed 2nd Method. It started fine and went on without trouble but when it came to upload the files it showed that "Activating the FileSystem" and then there was no progress. I waited for more than half hour, even I took a nap during that time. Then I decided to close the program. While stopping the process it said that your phone may not start. I had no choice but to stop the process and after that my phone refused to start. I was dead. I didn't knew what to do next and I had to go to shop also. I was damm frustated at that time and I was cursing myself for my decision. The reason for more mental pressure was that I have to go to barielly for my exams and I don't have time to get it repaired at service centre (It might take 3-4 days at the earliest). I also don't have any spare handset so that I can use that with my SIM. Infact We (Me and My Papa) already have Six handset and Eight Mobile connections so no chance.

At that moment I was unable to think of any solution so I decided to go to cyber cafe and try to search the flash file for Sony Ericsson W550i and then Flashing my cell phone with it. So I left my home. I went to Shyam's Cyber cafe and searched for the Flash File which I immediately got from
http://rapidshare.com/files/17422466/W550_R4CB020_MAIN_FS_EMEA1_RED49_BINARY.rar.html (Password : senews.org), It was a 20 MB + download so it took 30 minutes at the Broadband connection (In India Broadband connection means a speed of 256 kbps that too shared at cyber cafes).

While downloading I surfed the net for more information and I found that my cell phone was CID49 and that is why Far Manager was unable to connect it. For It another method has to be used and one file will be needed to download. I downloaded that file too and I got a printout of that method too (I will post that method in next post). Then I copied all the files on my pen drive and came to my shop. I stayed there till 8:30 pm (My cell was dead since 4:30 pm). I was unable to try the method as for that I need to go back to home. Those 4 Hours went like a decade spend in Hell waiting for my turn to be punished. I was hoping that I may be able to flash my cell phone.

After coming back to home. I opened my laptop, started XS++ and connected my cell phone to it (It detected in second attempt). I selected the Main File only for flashing (I hoped that if it worked then I don't need to delete my data). With God's name on my tounge and my fingers crossed I pressed the flash button. It started and after 17 minutes the process was completed and I disconnected my Cell Phone and Powered on. Voila, it started. I thanked God for helping me. I first called Mahendra and told him that my cell is alive again and I am going to retake the risk. He asked me not to do it again but I had already make up my mind and this time I also have all the required files.

So now with the flashing method which I had a printout I followed all the steps and this time my phone was being detected fine with Far Manager and I was able to open the FS of the cell pone. I copied the flash files to the /tga/preset/system/desktop/flash directory and then I disconnected the phone (I didn't tried the sms trick because I need to backup my messages first). I disconnected my cell phone and Started it.

This time the Flash themes worked and In my Second attempt I was able to do what I wanted to do.

This was a great experience and this was the only reason why I love taking risks because Now I am thinking that if I didn't took the risk in the first place then I would not have learned so many things which might come handy at later time. May be I was under a lot of trouble during that time but due to God's grace at the end I was able to learn a lot.

Now I am going to change my sms setting and update the audio and video drivers. But I will not do that in today or tomarow as I have to do a lot of things apart from my cell phone.

Bye and Happy Risk Taking
